It is Possible to Prolong the Life of Your Shirts, and it is Actually not that Hard

As Bil’s, we believe that you should consider the shirts you buy as investments. Having less but right shirts is as important as properly caring for them. If you properly take care of your shirts in your wardrobe, it is actually very easy to prolong their life. Moreover, you do not need to spend that much time and effort. All it takes is a little knowledge and expertise. At this point, we, as Bil’s, step in and aim to help you take care of your investments in the most appropriate way.

Washing your shirts every time you wear them is actually more about our habits than hygiene, and to be honest, it is not even necessary most of the time. In fact, washing your shirts less often will prevent them from colour fading and aging. Generally, it is enough for reuse to air many shirts properly, hang them on a hanger after shaking them a little. In addition, many stains can be handled with stain removal methods that you apply to the stained area without washing the entire shirt. There is no need to think that it is unhygienic. On the contrary, it will ease the burden on both your laundry basket and your wallet.

It goes without saying that running your washing machine on a long program for a single shirt is a waste of both water and energy. Therefore, unless it is an emergency, wait until your washing machine is full. However, it is better not to wait too long because running your machine beyond its capacity will cause your shirts to wear out and they won’t be washed properly.

Pay attention to the washing instruction symbols on your shirts. These instructions are specially prepared for each shirt by our expert teams at our fabric suppliers and they aim to prolong the life of your shirts.

Thanks to current technologies, washing machines and detergents, you no longer need to wash your shirts at very high, almost like boiling temperatures. Low temperature programs may as well perform the task, easing the burden both on your shirts and on the environment. This does not mean that you should wash every shirt at 30C, of course. It is useful to check the condition of your shirt before washing; if the low temperature is sufficient, washing in this way will prevent your shirt from wearing out.

Prefer eco-friendly laundry detergents and be careful not to use too much. Using too much detergent does not mean that your shirts will be cleaner or more hygienic, thus it will be sufficient to use reasonably. It is a known fact that laundry softeners have antistatic effects to prevent lint accumulation on dark coloured fabrics, and for this reason they are very popular. However, you should keep in mind that chemical-based softeners harm both your shirts and the environment. Thus, if it is necessary, use organic softeners. Try to avoid softeners with such ingredients as optical brighteners, chlorine, synthetic perfume and dyestuffs, paraben, phosphate, petroleum-based chemicals and sulphate.

Try to skip the dryer as much as possible in order to prolong the lives of your shirts and minimize your impact on the environment. Air drying is always a better option both for your shirts and the environment. But do not forget to hang up your shirts right after they are washed. Leaving your wet clothes in the machine for a long time will cause wrinkling or even mould at some point.

Different types of shirts need to be washed in different ways; thus, we recommend that you separate your clothes according to their types before washing them. Although sorting by colour is the most popular method, we also recommend that you sort by fabric types or washing temperatures. In addition, make sure that the pockets are empty and the zippers are zipped in order to make sure your clothes will not damage one another while washing. Lastly, do not wash coloured clothes that will be washed for the first time with light-coloured clothes.

If your shirt has been stained, treat the stained area right away. Natural materials such as cotton, linen or wool absorb stains very quickly; so, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to get rid of the stain. Unfortunately, there is no common stain removal method applicable to all kinds of stains. For this reason, make sure that you apply the stain removal method in accordance with the type of both the fabric and the stain. To decide, you can take a look at our “Stain Removal Guide”, where we share some tested stain removal methods on the most common stains.

As we mentioned in the “Treat the Stains Immediately” section, treating a stain right away will prevent the stain from penetrating deep into the fabric and it will also prevent you from wasting water and energy by unnecessarily washing your shirt for a small stain. But of course, you may need to have your shirts dry cleaned depending on how you use them. Unfortunately, most of the traditional dry-cleaning methods are not sustainable. In fact, many dry-cleaning companies use chemical perchloroethylene that cause health problems and create air pollution. So, when you go to a dry cleaner, ask if they use perchloroethylene, hydrocarbon solvent or D-5 cleaner and if possible, ask them to use other dry-cleaning methods. Even better, you can ask them to use environmentally friendly/ecological cleaners of whose main solvents are CO2 and water, if possible. Always keep a reusable clothing cover in your home and reduce the use of plastic covers by taking your shirts to the dry cleaner with this clothing cover. Lastly, do not forget to return the hangers that you received with your shirt so that they can be reused.

Some fabrics may be more or less prone to wrinkling depending on its texture. If necessary, straighten your shirts with steam rather than ironing. Steaming will allow the fabric fibres to open more gently. You may not even need to iron your shirts if you wash them at low spin speed, gently shake them after taking them out of the machine and hang them on a hanger and dry them. If your washing machine has a “Wrinkle Reduction” program, using this feature will also prevent the formation of wrinkles. Alternatively, you can also wash your shirts at a low spin speed, so they will come out a little wetter than normal washing. If your shirt definitely requires ironing, it is useful to determine the safest temperature for your shirt after carefully reading the washing and care instructions on your shirt. When ironing a cotton or linen fabric, if the fabric is slightly moist, the fibres will open more easily, and your shirt will be straightened faster.

Stain Removal Guide

Wine Stain

Step 1

Do not rub the stained area with a towel or a cloth, this will cause the stain to spread. Instead, as soon as the wine is spilled, press the towel or cloth firmly over the stained area and let it absorb the wine.

Step 2

Pour salt on the stained area and apply pressure on it. The salt will absorb the wine penetrated into the fabric and will alleviate the stain. Clean the salt with a brush after waiting for a while. If the stain is still strongly visible, wet the area with cold water thoroughly and repeat the treatment with salt.

Step 3

If the stain still does not come off, wet the stained area, and carefully apply a medium-effective bleach to this area. Make sure you use a colour protector with chlorine-free bleach on coloured shirts and do not forget to check the colourfastness of the fabric before using bleach. Regardless, do not use bleach on woollen and wool blended fabrics.

Step 4

When it comes to washing (preferably as soon as possible), apply a stain remover to the stained area and wash your shirt according to the washing instructions. Make sure you use a colour protector and a chlorine/bleach-free stain remover on your coloured shirts.

Blood Stain

Step 1

If possible, rinse the stain with cold water. Do not use hot water, otherwise it will cause the blood stain to penetrate more deeply into the fabric.

Step 2

If the stain is tenacious, soak the stained area in cold and salty water and let it sit for a while, and after removing it, carefully rub it with a liquid detergent. If the shirt is washable, wash it according to the washing instructions. If not, remove the liquid detergent from the shirt using a moist towel.

Step 3

If the stain is dry and really tenacious, there are other methods that you can apply at home. Mix one batch of baking soda (alternatively, corn starch or talcum powder) with cold water and mix it until it forms a paste. Apply this paste on the stained area and let it sit for a minimum of 30 minutes or overnight, then wash the shirt according to the washing instructions.

Step 4

Alternatively, you can completely get rid of the blood stain by using half a lemon and salt, only to be used on light coloured shirts. Firstly, squeeze the juice of half a lemon on the stain and pour a pinch of salt on it. After waiting for 10 minutes, wipe off the remnants of the stain, lemon juice and salt with a wet cloth. Apply this method on only light-coloured shirts as it can cause loss of colour in dark-coloured shirts.

Coffee Stain

Step 1

If the coffee stain is fresh and new, quickly rinse the area with cold water to ease the effect of the stain on the fabric. The faster you do this, the more likely the stain will be removed. Sometimes even this alone can be enough to remove the stain.

Step 2

Keep the stain wet and apply liquid laundry detergent to the stained area and wait for 3-5 minutes. If the stain is not removed, repeat this procedure until it is.

Step 3

After the stain is completely removed, if necessary, wash your shirt according to the washing instructions.

Oil Stain

Step 1

Firstly, start by using a regular dish soap and the rinse the stain with laundry detergent. Afterwards, rinse the stained area with hot water. If the stain is not removed, repeat the procedure.

Step 2

Some oil stains may require stain remover and extra dish soap or liquid laundry detergent. Make sure you use a colour protector and a stain remover that does not contain chlorine or bleach for your coloured shirts. Apply the stain remover on the area and wait approximately for 10 minutes. Without rinsing, apply dish soap or liquid laundry detergent and wait for another 10 minutes.

Step 3

If your shirt is washable, wash it according to the washing instructions. If the stain is not removed after being washed in the machine, repeat step 2. Do not steam or iron the area until the stain is completely removed. Steaming or ironing the stained area will cause the stain to become more permanent and make it harder to remove.

Sweat and Deodorant Stain

We know how annoying it can be to have yellow sweat stains under the armpits of white shirts. The interesting thing is that sweat is not actually the cause of these stains. Sweat itself is normally colourless. What causes the yellow stains is the aluminium-based ingredients in deodorants. These aluminium-based ingredients react with the natural oil in your body, causing these yellow stains to appear. Sometimes using laundry detergent can even make the stain worse. This kind of stains are hard to get rid of once they occur.

Since the ingredients of deodorants and detergents vary greatly from brand to brand, there is no clear standard method for removing such sweat stains. For this reason, it is necessary to examine the stain carefully to get an idea of how to remove the stain.

White Stains

If the stain is white and has caused the fabric to get hardened, any stain remover will help you get rid of the stain. Start the process as soon as you notice the stain. Rinse the are with cold water for a while and gently apply stain remover and wash according to the washing instructions. Make sure you use a colour protector and a chlorine/bleach-free stain remover your coloured shirts.

Yellow Stains

If the stain is yellow, it can be quite hard to get rid of it. However, you can still remove stain with a solution you can make using 3 batch baking soda and one batch of water. You can apply the solution to the stained area and let it sit for approximately one hour then you can rinse it or wash it according to the washing instructions. To get the best result, you may need to apply this method several times in a row.

Do Not Use Bleach

While the best method to remove these types of sweat stains seems to be using bleach, it is actually not the case. Reaction of the bleach with the stain can make the stain even worse.

Stain Prevention

As we mentioned earlier, such stains can be quite challenging. If these types of stains occur frequently, the best thing you can do is to prevent the formation of the stain in the first place. In order to do this, make sure that:

- your deodorant has completely dried before putting on your clothes,
- you do not use deodorants that contain aluminium-based ingredients,
- you do not use too much deodorant.
