1. Hello Sinem and Enis! Can you first tell us a bit about yourselves? What kind of education did you receive, and where do you live?

SK: Hello! After completing my Interior Architecture and Environmental Design education at Bilkent University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, I joined a short program called Design Culture Management at Bilgi University because I was curious about the management side of things and wanted to pursue the profession in Istanbul. My life in Istanbul began in 2003 and has been centered in Beyoğlu, Cihangir, for the last 15 years. I was a child who was always excited about the visual world, especially painting and watching those who paint. When choosing a university, my family guided me towards a more “professional” career, integrating my creative inclinations with a tangible profession. In short, I’ve always had a general idea of what I would do in life, but I never imagined it would become this serious.

EK: After receiving my business education at Bentley University in Boston, I moved to London to take my passion for interior design, which had grown since childhood, to a professional level. Following my education at Inchbald School of Design, I had experiences that still excite me today, like working at the Albert Museum and London Design Festival. In 2013, I made a sudden decision to move to Istanbul.

2. What have been the most important turning points in your journey to where you are today? How did your paths cross?

EK: In my view, consistency is important. Under the roof of Sanayi313, we managed to reach different audiences over the years through various disciplines. Today, Sanayi313 is 10 years old, and we continue to grow with the same excitement and joy. From the beginning, Sanayi313 was a project I believed in deeply. I attribute its prominence to its uniqueness and originality. Sinem and I crossed paths during Sanayi313’s maturation period. As someone who strongly believes in the importance of teamwork, I find it very valuable and motivating to work with friends who share the same vision.

3. What is the story behind the creation of Sanayi313? You transformed an old car repair shop into such a collective. How was this transformation process for you?

EK: If you follow artists, you can find the right direction in every society, in every city. Their presence here played an important role in our decision to come to Sanayi. When we arrived, the Auto Industrial Zone, despite being in the city center, still had significant growth potential. I’m happy that we spearheaded this transformation with the Sanayi313 project. Over time, with the increase in the plaza population, we were able to meet many needs. The industrial buildings, which offered many possibilities for interior design, were the reason we chose this location. Details like the ceiling heights and iron doors left over from the repair shops were very suitable for the space I wanted to create. From the beginning, Sanayi313 was a project I believed in deeply. I attribute its prominence to its uniqueness and originality. We transformed it into our dream without letting the space dictate anything to us. Sanayi313 is now 10 years old and always ready for new adventures.

4. Under the same roof, you also have a shop. We see both your own designs and vintage products that you’ve collected from abroad. How does the process of creation and product selection proceed?

SK: The products Enis has collected over the years from around the world, particularly certain objects he’s interested in, gradually find their way onto the store’s shelves after various travels. Since he collects each item with a personal connection, as if he were buying them for himself, there’s often a deep sadness in the office when some of them are sold. Recently, we created a new furniture line that combines materials we love to use with impeccable craftsmanship and simple forms. We participated in 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen this past June with these pieces and received feedback that made us very happy. We met and connected with interesting people from various groups, from students to manufacturers, large and small design firms, and journalists. We took photos of every corner and manhole cover we saw in the city and added them to our inspiration folders. In March 2025, we’ll be in Paris at Matter and Shape with new additions to this family.

EK: Sanayi313 is an Istanbul-based collective. The design studio at the core of the SANAYI313 brand umbrella also houses a store/gallery space that offers unconventional shopping experiences. All departments operate interactively, feeding and inspiring each other under the SANAYI313 vision, while this multifunctional use approach in a space converted from an old car repair shop in Istanbul’s industrial zone offers visitors different ways to interact with the SANAYI313 world and appeals to all their senses.

5. You also have a printed magazine called SANAYI313 PAPER, which is published twice a year. How did the idea of publishing a magazine come about? Do you have a favorite issue?

EK: SANAYI313 has a digital publication called SANAYI313 PAPER, which focuses on contemporary living culture and creativity, as a means of maintaining constant communication with its audience. The carefully selected content from this publication also forms the basis of an annual print magazine, which is edited by Sidni Karavil and the SANAYI313 editorial team. SANAYI313 PAPER, featuring in-depth interviews, articles, and photographs, appeals to culture enthusiasts with its content on art, design, architecture, gastronomy, and travel. Each new issue builds upon the previous one, so the newest issue is always my favorite.

6. Enis, after living in London for many years, you returned to Istanbul. How did your time in England influence your perspective?

EK: I think my days in England hold an important place in my career. It was my starting point. I can concretely see the reflections of the interactions created by the things I accumulated in different countries in the spaces and objects I design.

7. Recently, we’ve often come together for the project of Petra Coffee and Bil’s Pera store. You both have your own unique style. How would you describe your daily style? What are the pieces you feel most comfortable in?

SK: I’ve had times when I played around with clothing and tried out different looks, but in general, I’ve never gravitated towards very feminine outfits. Since I recently had my hair cut very short and became quite handsome, I’ve returned to the mini skirts that I’ve always loved. I have plenty of black clothes made up of shirts and pants in various cuts and models that probably only I notice the differences in. Over time, I’ve minimized my shopping with chain brands. While this doesn’t completely exempt me from trends, it allows me to choose items that are relatively timeless for my wardrobe. Recently, I’ve been looking more at second-hand stores as well. EK: Black, timeless, with my unique accessories… T-shirts and jeans make me feel the most comfortable.

8. In this shoot, you’re both wearing Bil’s Oxford Shirts. We know you’re both shirt people; what do you look for in a shirt?

SK: In all shirts, whether long-sleeved, short-sleeved, wide, or standard-cut, the common feature I look for is obedience. I prefer shirts that allow me to play around with them a bit, to shape them into the fit I want, rather than rigid ones that impose their own form on me. EK: A shirt should be comfortable, loose, and long.

9. Thank you for taking the time for us. Lastly, could you share a playlist you listen to at the office with us?

We are listening to the playlists of our dear friend Undomondo that are suitable for moment.
